EC ruling prompts fresh subsidy call from postmasters

The Irish Postmasters Union has demanded that the Government introduce a subsidy scheme to keep rural post offices open.

The call follows a ruling by the European Commission today allowing the British government to give £150m-a-year to the Royal Mail.

The money is designed to ensure the company is able to meet its public service obligation to handle social welfare and pension payments.
