Russian enrichment proposal 'still under consideration'
Iran’s foreign minister today said his country had not ruled out Russia’s uranium enrichment proposal, but stressed several issues still need to be discussed, including timing and location.
“We are ready to compromise,” Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said during a brief visit to Indonesia. “We believe we should move from here to compromise, not go back.”
Iranian and Russian officials held talks this week to try to find a way to end a stand-off over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, but no visible progress was made.
The discussions centred on a proposal calling for uranium for Iran’s nuclear energy programme to be enriched in Russia.
Mottaki said four issues still needed to be resolved before a deal could be reached, including which nations and companies would be involved.
But “if you ask me, the main element is timing and place or places”, he said.
The UN nuclear watchdog is to hold a meeting on March 6 about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, a process that could lead to punishment by the UN Security Council.
