Kavanagh bows out of Nemo's senior campaign

22/02/2006 - 15:07:23
Joe Kavanagh has played his last senior match for Nemo Rangers.

The former Cork star came on with five minutes left in last Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to St. Gall’s, but has ruled himself out of playing any part in Nemo’s defence of their county title this summer.

“I won’t be involved with the seniors.

“I think it is time to call it a day.

“There are a lot of young footballers coming through here like Paul Kerrigan and the future belongs to them now,” said Kavanagh.

However, the Nemo ace still hopes to line out for the club’s second team this year.

“I hope to play for the intermediates provided that they want me to.

“If not, I will have to go knocking on Dinny Allen’s door and see if I can get a game with the juniors,” he joked.

But last Sunday offered a sad ending to a senior club career which started in 1990 and saw him win five county and Munster medals and two All-Irelands.

“It would have been great to have finished up with 10 or 15 minutes on the pitch at Croke Park on Paddy’s Day, but it just wasn’t to be.

“We just never really got started against St Gall’s.

“We knew going up there that they would play a pressure game, but it’s a very difficult thing to counter.”
