Taoiseach rejects Rabbitte’s criticism of bank profits
22/02/2006 - 12:30:51The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has rejected criticism of the level of profits being made by Irish banks.
Speaking in the Dáil this morning, Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte accused the main banks of ripping off their customers, claiming they were making three times as much profit per customer as their European competitors.
His claim follows financial results showing that AIB made €1.7bn in profits worldwide last year, almost €800m of it in the Republic.
Mr Ahern responded by saying it was a shame that Mr Rabbitte was criticising banks for being profitable.
