Dr Martin absent from Pope's list of new cardinals

22/02/2006 - 13:19:45
The Archbishop of Dublin has not been included in Pope Benedict XVI's first ever list of new cardinals.

Media speculation earlier this week said Dr Diarmuid Martin was in line to receive a red hat when the cardinals are formally appointed next month.

The new cardinals chosen by the Pope today include the Archbishop of Krakow, Stanislaw Dziwisz, a long-serving secretary of Pope John Paul II.

US Archbishop William Levada, whom Benedict appointed as his successor as head of the Vatican's powerful doctrinal department, is also included, as is Archbishop Sean O'Malley of Boston.
