Sunken Egyptian ferry's black box found
Authorities have found the black box of the Egyptian ferry that sank in the Red Sea earlier this month leaving more than 1,000 people dead, the transport minister said today.
The black box of the Al-Salaam Boccaccio 98 was recovered with the help of two International Maritime Organisation experts from France and Britain, Mohammed Mansour told the official MENA news agency.
He said the black box of doomed ship would be analysed in Britain.
The Al-Salaam was carrying about 1,400 people when it sank earlier this month after a fire broke out during its journey from Saudi Arabia to the Egyptian port at Safaga.
Cairo has sought help from international experts, including the UN International Maritime Organisation, in nvestigating the circumstances of the sinking, The ferry was found on Friday in about 2,625 feet of water approximately 50 miles from Safaga.
The team used a robot to recover the data recorder – equivalent to the black box on a plane – that could explain what caused the tragedy.
Many Egyptian workers returning from jobs in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Gulf were among the passengers.
