Little decided for European football giants
Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko struck as Bayern Munich and AC Milan played out a 1-1 draw in their Champions League last-16 clash in Germany while Lyon claimed a priceless away-leg victory over PSV Eindhoven.
Ballack gave Milan goalkeeper Dida no chance when he beat him with a stunning right-footed 25-yard shot into the top right of the goal after 23 minutes.
However, Shevchenko hauled Milan level with a penalty awarded when Valerian Ismael was penalised for handball.
Ballack had already sent a header over the bar in the 12th minute as Bayern started the match in a more attacking mode before they went ahead courtesy of Ballack’s stunning strike.
The visitors had shown little but Shevchenko coolly converted the penalty to pull Milan level in the 57th minute.
Lyon survived being reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes to claim a highly-impressive 1-0 win.
Juninho scored with a stunning 30-yard free-kick and was a constant thorn in PSV’s side.
Alex drilled a 30-yard free-kick for PSV which came back off the bar as both sides were dedicated to attack before Juninho’s 64th-minute breakthrough, which was aided by PSV goalkeeper Gomes’ poor judgement.
However, a red card for Sidney Govou for two bookings in 13 minutes threatened to derail Lyon and Arouna Kone hit a post as PSV searched for a way back.
