Blues chief keen on Adu

21/02/2006 - 08:25:44
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck insists the club will be keen to buy Freddy Adu “if he’s as good as people say he is”.

The Ghana-born American teenager is currently playing in Major League Soccer for DC United but the club have hinted he could be available at the end of the year.

Frank Arnesen, Chelsea’s head of development and scouting, is likely to be the man who determines whether Chelsea bid for Adu, who has already made his full international debut for the USA.

And Buck is happy to let the Dane – acquired from Tottenham last summer - determine whether Adu is good enough to make an impact in the Barclays Premiership.

“We are interested in any young top-notch player,” Buck told Sky Sports News.

“That’s why we brought Frank Arnesen on board and I’m sure Frank has watched him play and is looking at him. And if he’s as good as people say he is, then I think we would be interested.”

The Premiership leaders are on course for a second successive domestic league title but remain committed to improving their public image.

That took a knock 12 months ago when referee Anders Frisk retired following Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Barcelona, after receiving death threats. He had been strongly criticised by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho after the first leg in the Nou Camp, for which the Portuguese was handed a two-match touchline ban by UEFA.

The teams meet again this week in Europe, a tie Chelsea hope to navigate without a hint of controversy.

“We always have to work to try to make the world realise what we’re doing and that we’re doing it well,” said Buck.

“We’re always trying to improve the image of Chelsea but it’s not something we started this week, last week or last year.

“From the moment Roman Abramovich bought this club we knew we had to be and we wanted to be a good citizen. We’ve made some mistakes and we’ve learned from our mistakes.”
