Ireland fails to reach target for implementing EU rules

Ireland's has failed to reach the agreed target for transposing EU internal market rules into national law, according to new figures from the European Commission.

The figures show that Ireland is one of only eight EU states that have yet to implement more than 1.5% of all directives relating to the internal market.

However, Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy said Ireland was close to reaching this target and, overall, the level of implementation across the EU was at its highest since monitoring began in 1997.
