Mladic used fake names during hospital stays - report
Wartime Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic used fake names during his hospital treatment in Belgrade in the 1990s, the Serbian authorities said today, amid reports that the top war crimes fugitive may finally be arrested by the end of this month.
Serbia-Montenegro’s agency in charge with co-operation with the UN war crimes tribunal said that the document showing that Mladic used three different fake names while he was in hospital in Serbia between 1993-97 will be handed over to the court in The Hague, Netherlands.
The document could be used as key evidence in the UN war crimes trial of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic to prove Serbia aided and offered refuge to Mladic during and after Bosnia’s 1992-95 war, legal experts said.
Rasim Ljajic, the head of the agency, refused to say which fake names Mladic used, or specify for which illnesses Mladic was treated while in hospital.
The document’s release coincided with reports that Mladic, who has been on the run since his 1995 genocide indictment by the UN tribunal, may finally be handed over to The Hague by the end of February.
