Dungannon, aided by four Ulster-contracted players, dug deep to hold off the late charge of Galwegians for a 29-27 win at Stevenson Park.

Flanker Ryan Caldwell, one of the Ulster players available, full back Robin Morrow and lock Michael Rainey scored a try apiece in the first half to send ‘Gannon in at the break with a 19-14 advantage.

‘Wegians had got back into the game thanks to tries from centres Brian Murphy and John Heary, and two pushover scores from hooker John Burke, but a late Tyrone Howe try won it for the hosts.

'Gannon fly half and former Ireland Under-21 skipper Gareth Steenson, who has signed terms with English side Rotherham Titans for next season, kicked nine points.

The win moves Jeremy Davidson’s side above UCD into sixth in the standings.
