White House rejects call to close Guantanamo

16/02/2006 - 16:05:19
The White House today rejected a recommendation in a UN report to shut the prison for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“These are dangerous terrorists that we’re talking about that are there,” said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

The spokesman dismissed the UN report as “a rehash” of allegations that have been made previously by lawyers for some Guantanamo detainees, saying the military treats all detainees humanely.

“We know that al-Qaida terrorists are trained in trying to disseminate false allegations,” McClellan said.

The report, summarising an investigation by five UN experts, called on the US government “to close down the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and to refrain from any practice amounting to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment”.
