EU warns Iran of further action over uranium programme

The European Union warned it will consider pushing for further action against Iran through the United Nations if Tehran does not stop its uranium enrichment programme.

“If things continue to deteriorate further we will need to consider options for further action through the United Nations,” said EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini said.

The IAEA is due to meet on March 6 to discuss Iran’s compliance over the dispute. Possible sanctions against Iran, imposed by the UN Security Council, could follow.

On February 4, the IAEA reported Iran to the UN Security Council and called on its government to suspend all enrichment-related activities.

Instead, the Iranian government suspended certain aspects of its co-operation with the IAEA and said it would proceed with uranium enrichment.
