Ministers to discuss long-term care of the elderly
The Cabinet is holding a special meeting this morning to discuss long-term care policies for Ireland's growing elderly population.
A range of issues are due to discussed at the meeting, including ways to implement the Government's policy of ensuring that a maximum number of older people are cared for in their own homes.
The opposition is demanding that the Government meet this target by providing more funding for home-care initiatives.
Speaking this morning, Labour spokesperson Liz McManus said: "Care of the elderly is something that is central to government policy and yet they have delayed making decisions that are urgently needed.
"Elderly people who want to stay at home have great difficulty accessing the grants and the aids that they need.
"The reality on the ground is people are struggling to try and ensure that they can keep their loved ones at home."
