MI5 plan causing concern among nationalist parties
15/02/2006 - 10:44:44The British government's plan to give the MI5 spy agency an expanded role in the North is causing concern among nationalist political parties.
Under the plans, MI5 is set to take over responsibility for national security from the PSNI Special Branch next year.
Sinn Féin and the SDLP are both opposed to the move, with SDLP leader Mark Durkan saying it would lead to a weakening of accountability and would be bad for policing in general.
