Cueto performs in Robinson regime

09/02/2006 - 08:07:54
Mark Cueto is walking, talking, try-scoring proof of the assertion that good things come to those who persevere.

After being continually overlooked during Clive Woodward’s reign, under England head coach Andy Robinson the Sale wing cannot stop scoring tries.

Against Italy in Rome on Saturday he is determined to add to his 10 tries in 12 internationals so far, but is happy to acknowledge that today's polished finisher in part is due to the ambivalence he encountered from Woodward.

“I have always had confidence in myself,” says Cueto.

“There were times when people were saying: ‘Why aren’t you playing for England?’ But there were so many good players out there. Looking back, maybe I was a naïve player. I relied a lot on natural instinct.”

Cueto did not take up the game until joining Altrincham Kersal RFC at 17.
