Casey in contention

09/02/2006 - 10:19:26
Paul Casey has put himself into the mix at the Johnnie Walker Classic at The Vines in Perth, shooting a four-under-par 68 to sit third, four strokes behind American Kevin Stadler, who shot an eight-under 64.

Casey birdied two of his first three holes of the day before recording another four birdies on the back nine to put himself in a good position for day two of the tournament.

But it has been Stadler who has stolen the show, the 26-year-old ranked 256 in the world posting an amazing six consecutive birdies, from the ninth to the 14th holes, to overtake the earlier pacesetter, Australian Richard Green.

Green, who finished third, a shot behind winner Tiger Woods and South African Ernie Els at last week’s Dubai Desert Classic, made a great start with birdies at his first three holes, the 10th, 11th and 12th.

The Victorian went on to collect six more birdies, including another three in four holes from the first, with bogeys at the 13th, fifth and seventh holes costing him a lower score as he shot 66.
