Probe into prisoner's cell death

09/02/2006 - 13:01:41
The Prison Service today launched an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old prisoner.

The man, who was from West Dublin, was found unconscious in his cell in Mountjoy prison at 9.40am.

He was given medical attention before being transferred to the Mater Hospital, but he was pronounced dead at 10.25pm.

A Prison Service spokesman said a full post mortem exam would be carried out, along with toxicology tests, to determine the cause of death.

He added that the Governor John Lonergan would also be carrying out an investigation.

The 23-year-old man had been serving a four-year sentence for robbery and was due for release in November.

He had been sharing a cell with another prisoner in Mountjoy, which is due to be demolished within two years and replaced by a new prison complex in North Dublin.

Although there have been a number of suicides and attempted suicides in Mountjoy prison, it is not thought to be the cause of death in this case.
