FG seeks special committee to deal with bird-flu threat
09/02/2006 - 11:26:07Fine Gael has called on the Government to establish a special committee to deal with the potential threat of bird flu spreading to Ireland.
The call follows yesterday's confirmation that the virus has now spread to Africa after being detected in poultry stocks in Nigeria.
The World Health Organisation has warned that bird flu could spread quickly throughout Africa and increase the risk of a global influenza pandemic among humans.
Fine Gael TD Denis Naughten said today that the fact that many birds migrate from Africa to Ireland means the Government must take stronger action to prepare for a potential outbreak.
