09/02/2006 - 08:14:24
Tesco announced its first steps into the United States today by unveiling plans for the £250m (€363.8m)-a-year roll-out of its Express store format.

The long-awaited move across the Atlantic will see the UK market leader open its first convenience stores on the west coast of the US next year.

Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy described the move as “tremendously exciting” as Tesco looks to develop its international operation, which is focused on 12 countries in Europe and Asia.

He added: “It is a market we have researched extensively for many years and over the last year we have committed serious resources to developing a format that we believe will be really popular with American consumers.”
