HSE to prepare national cervical cancer screening scheme
08/02/2006 - 07:28:30Minister for Health Mary Harney has reportedly asked the Health Service Executive to prepare a plan for the implementation of a national cervical cancer screening programme.
Reports this morning said Ms Harney was insisting she was fully committed to the move, but had given no timeframe for the roll-out of screening throughout the country.
A national screening programme was promised 10 years ago, but so far, it has only been implemented on a trial basis in the mid-west.
Ireland has one of the highest death rates from cervical cancer in Europe and screening is seen as crucial to tackling the problem.
