Conference to discuss tsunami threat to western Europe

Experts from across the world are gathering in Dublin to discuss the possible threat of a tsunami hitting western Europe.

The possibility of installing an early-warning system in the Atlantic is also due to be discussed at a three-day conference which gets underway today.

Tsunamis are extremely rare in Europe, but an earthquake in Lisbon 250 years ago is believed to have triggered 12-metre waves that reached the west of Ireland within four hours.
