Boro warn fans
Middlesbrough fans have been warned they will be arrested if they run on to the pitch at the Riverside Stadium after a high-profile protest at the weekend.
A disgruntled supporter managed to make his way from the stands to the home dug-out during Saturday’s 4-0 Barclays Premiership home defeat by Aston Villa to hurl his season ticket in the direction of manager Steve McClaren.
The club has revealed that matter is now being dealt with by police, and warned others who do the same could be banned.
“The incident is a matter for the police, who we understand are considering the circumstances of what happened,” club spokesman Dave Allan told the club’s official website, www.mfc.co.uk.
“However, we would ask supporters to be aware that it is an arrestable offence to invade the pitch. We understand that tensions are running high at present, but would warn fans against pitch incursion as this will result in their arrest by the police.”
Under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, it is an arrestable offence to enter on to the playing area or any adjacent area to which spectators are not generally admitted without lawful authority. Conviction may result in a Banning Order.
