Laois 1-13 Wexford 0-10

Laois forward Donie Brennan bagged a brilliant goal to steer the midlanders past Wexford in a topsy-turvy NFL Division 1B tie in Portlaoise.

The 19-year-old netted after 22 minutes of the second half to put Laois 1-10 to 0-07 up – a position from where they never looked back.

Wexford went in at the break with a 0-05 to 0-04 lead – points from Paddy Colfer, who lined out in midfield in place of late withdrawal Diarmuid Kinsella, and Mattie Forde set the visitors on their way.

But Laois really up their effort in the second half – substitute Brennan was central to that. Forde chalked up two more frees for Wexford, however, white flags from Padraig Clancy, Chris Conway (3 frees), Colm Kelly and Billy Sheehan saw Laois roar ahead.

Brennan’s goal, teed up by defender Joe Higgins, really deflated Wexford and there was no way back for new manager Paul Bealin’s charges.
