Live Register total increases slightly

The seasonally-adjusted Live Register total increased slightly from 157,000 in December to 157,400 in January, an increase of 400, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

This compares with a corresponding decrease of 2,000 in January 2005.

In the year to January 2006, there was an unadjusted decrease of 404 (-0.3%). This compares with an unadjusted decrease of 2,983 (-1.9%) in the year to December 2005.

The standardised unemployment rate in January was 4.3%, the same rate as recorded in July 2005, based on the Quarterly National Household Survey.

The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers (those who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to unemployment assistance or benefit.
