Oliviera handed Williams chance

02/02/2006 - 19:26:06
Williams have given a Formula One chance to Brazilian driver Joao Paulo de Oliveira, who will test for the team on Friday.

De Oliveira has a solid record in junior racing, having won the German Formula Three title in 2003 before moving to the Japanese series, which he won last season.

The 24-year-old, who has been given the chance as a result of Williams’ links to Brazilian oil giants Petrobras, will be given 20 laps to prove himself at Valencia.

“I am delighted that Williams have invited me to drive their car,” he said. “To be driving a Formula One car is a life long ambition and I intend to take full advantage of the opportunity.

“I hope that I can also provide the team with some valuable feedback as they prepare for the season ahead.”

Team boss Sir Frank Williams added: “We have closely followed Joao Paulo’s career to date and it would appear to be an entirely appropriate time to offer him his first Formula One test.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how he responds to the challenge.”
