Three girls on class trip die in cabin fire

31/01/2006 - 10:40:12
Three Danish girls died early today when a fire swept through the mountain cabin they were staying in during a school trip, police said.

The girls – aged 12, 13 and 14 – were from the Soer-Fyn region of Denmark, and were with about 190 schoolchildren and adult leaders staying in southwestern Norway. The victims’ names were not immediately released.

District sheriff Knut Nomeland said there had been six other girls in the cabin when the fire started at about 2.15am (1.15am Irish time). Two suffered minor injuries.

“This was a very dramatic incident,” he said on state radio network NRK. “There were three who died in the fire because they couldn’t get out.”

He said the cause of the fire had not be determined. The inside of the cabin was destroyed.

The cabin complex was near Hovden, about 170 miles southwest of Oslo.
