Minister wants probe into greyhound chief's sacking

31/01/2006 - 17:38:11
Sports Minister John O’Donoghue tonight called for an independent investigation into the controversial sacking of the chief executive of Bord na gCon in the wake of a greyhound doping scandal.

The Minister has received a report on the dismissal of Aidan Tynan and the management of drugs offences from Bord na gCon chairman Paschal Taggart.

But Mr O’Donoghue revealed he had also asked the former secretary general of the Department of Justice Tim Dalton to conduct an independent review.

“The greyhound industry is an important national industry and its continued well-being is a matter of concern to me, to Bord na gCon, and to the many people who own and train dogs or who follow the sport,” the minister said.

“Members of the public must have confidence in the industry’s standing and its operation if it is to continue to enjoy its current substantial level of support.

“The success it has achieved to date is in no small way due to the policies put in place by Bord na gCon. Accordingly, the issues which have come into the public domain in recent days merit independent assessment.”

Mr Tynan was dismissed after the board learned he had written to the minister over a decision not to publish details about EPO doping offences which ended with two trainers being fined.
