Bank union seeks more profit-sharing deals for workers

30/01/2006 - 11:56:22
The Irish Bank Officials Association is demanding that financially successful firms share some of their profits with their workers.

The association's general secretary, Larry Broderick, said today that private-sector pay had fallen behind that in the public sector as a result of recent social partnership deals.

"We've co-operated fully with employers who had huge difficulties when there were financial constraints on them," he said.

"We believe now it is timely, when organisations are very, very profitable, that some of that profit is shared with the employees."

Mr Broderick was speaking as the IBOA formally laid out its demands ahead of talks on a new social partnership agreement.

The association is seeking a 10% pay increase over two years, as well as a local-bargaining clause that will unions to seek "top-up" pay increases from profitable companies.
