Armed gang raid businessman’s home in Tipperary

An armed gang has escaped with a substantial sum of money following an overnight raid on the home of a businessman in Co Tipperary.

Three men armed with at least two guns entered the businessman's family home in Monard, near Tipperary Town, at around 12.20am.

They assaulted the man and demanded cash while his three young children were asleep nearby.

A member of the victim's family managed to alert the Gardaí and the gang fled with a large amount of money after confronting an officer who arrived on the scene.

No shots were fired during the robbery, but the businessman needed hospital treatment for a head injury he sustained at the hands of the raiders.
