Eircom League set to wind down

A fundamental change to the structure of the eircom League has moved a step closer at the league's AGM in Limerick.

The league has voted on a declaration of intent to merge wit hthe FAI, subject to formal final ratification at a special general meeting to be held in the summer.

There will be no promotion or relegation at the end of the 2006 season, as the League is officially being wound up in its present form.

The clubs will have to apply for membership for a new FAI-run league in 2007 and their finishing positions at the end of the year will go toward determining who plays where.
