Gates returns to World Forum to push disease efforts

27/01/2006 - 09:13:42
Microsoft’s Bill Gates, a darling of the annual meeting of government and business leaders meeting in a Swiss ski resort, was returning today to help beef up global efforts to fight tuberculosis.

The threat from TB and the other serious diseases bid for equal attention with the Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections, terrorism and Iran at the leaders’ annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joined in the Forum in a video link from Washington as the leaders pondered the Palestinian election results.

She said the United States still regarded Hamas as a terrorist organisation and urged Palestinian leaders to renounce violence.

“You cannot have one foot in politics and another in terror,” Rice said.

The Hamas victory electrified the Forum, as participants discussed into the late evening what it might mean for business, and for the business of peace.

Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency, told the meeting that the world was racing against time to keep terrorists from acquiring nuclear weapons.
