Shot fired at driver who tried to knock down PSNI officer

26/01/2006 - 13:42:00
Police in the North have opened fire on a car whose occupants allegedly tried to knock down a police officer at a checkpoint in Co Tyrone this morning.

The PSNI said officers began chasing the car when it drove through the checkpoint on the Dooish Road in Dromore.

It said the driver twice rammed the patrol car that was following him and the shot was fired when he tried to knock down a policeman at St Dympna's Road.

The car, which was carrying two occupants, sped away from the scene and was found abandoned a short time later.

The PSNI said there was no indication that anybody had been hit by the shot that was fired.

The Police Ombudsman, who investigates all shots fired by the police in the North, has been informed of the incident.
