Govt to introduce random breath tests as soon as possible

26/01/2006 - 12:41:13
The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has told the Dáil that the Government wants to introduce legislation as soon as possible to allow for random breath-testing of motorists.

Yesterday, the Taoiseach confirmed that the Attorney General was of the view that the measure could be introduced without a constitution referendum.

At present, Gardaí can only ask motorists to take breath tests if their driving has raised suspicions.

Road safety groups have long been demanding a new system whereby motorists could be tested at random, but many people have expressed concern that this may be unconstitutional.

Speaking in the Dáil today, Ms Harney said the Government now planned to introduce legislation paving the way for random tests "hopefully before the summer of this year".
