Govt approves move to set up new youth justice service
26/01/2006 - 11:33:54The Government has approved a number of reforms designed to reduce the level of re-offending among young people who come before the courts.
The changes include the establishment of a new youth justice service with responsibility for dealing with minors who break the law.
The new service will be attached to the Department of Justice and will take over responsibility for detaining young offenders from the Prison Service and the Department of Education.
An education strategy is also being developed in youth detention centres, with the aim of preventing offenders from returning to a life of crime.
