Sweden still strong despite Wales surge
Wales’ Becky Morgan and Becky Brewerton made a surge through the field with a two-under-par 70 but Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam and Liselotte Neumann tightened their grip on the Women’s World Cup with a 69 in the second day foursomes at Sun City in South Africa.
The Swedish favourites go into the final day singles on 10 under, three shots ahead of South Korea’s Bo Bae Song and Meena Lee, who posted a 72.
The Welsh pair are six shots off the lead in fifth place after a solid round of three birdies and just one bogey.
“We played really well today and could have made a lot more birdie chances,” said 31-year-old Morgan, who has a wealth of experience playing on the LPGA Tour in America.
“But I’m more than happy with a 70 in the foursomes. Tomorrow, there are two rounds to count and this is such a tough golf course that there is sure to be big swings.
“ Anything can still happen and we’ve still got a great chance.”
Brewerton, 23, plays all her golf in Europe, and she added: “When you’ve got a partner like Becky it’s perfect. We had a game plan for the foursomes and it worked perfectly.
“We played together a lot for Wales as amateurs and we were sixth in this event last year and the experience definitely pays off.”
Scotland’s Catriona Matthew and Janice Moodie, fourth last year, got to five under par after three early birdies but dropped four shots in the final six holes for a 73 and slipped back to joint seventh on one under.
England’s Laura Davies and Kirsty Taylor had a sorry day with a 78 for five over, tied 16th of the 20 teams.
“We’ve got to finish in the top 10, otherwise it feels the same as missing the cut,” said Davies
Sorenstam, the world number one number one and Neumann, who will be 40 this year, have masses of experience and both have US and British Open titles to their names.
But both admitted it is far from over.
“We’re in the position we want to be in, but we’re definitely not taking anything for granted,” said Sorenstam.
“Tomorrow is going to be a long day when every shot counts and anything can still happen.”
