Two die in road accidents

Two people have been killed following separate accidents on Ireland’s roads, gardai said today.

Seamus Walsh, 57, was travelling alone when his car hit another vehicle at Dunheeda, Kingscourt, Co Cavan.

Mr Walsh of Drumbride, Drumconrath, Co Meath died from his injuries following the collision, which happened shortly before 11.30pm yesterday.

Two men were taken to Navan Hospital but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

In Co Tipperary an 82-year-old woman died after her car was involved in a crash with a van.

Gardai said the accident happened on the N62 between Birr and Roscrea at Loughnavatta around 5pm yesterday.

Teresa Delaney, of Dromkeenan, Brosna, Birr, Co Offaly was travelling alone at the time of the incident.

The van driver was taken to Nenagh Hospital with leg injuries and later transferred to Limerick Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, a pensioner who died after his tractor collided with a van in Co Westmeath was today named by gardai.

Daniel Duck, 65, was taken to Mullingar General Hospital following the accident on Thursday afternoon.

But Mr Duck, of Joanstown, Rathowen, died from his injuries early yesterday.

The latest fatalities bring the total number of road deaths in the Irish Republic this year to 23.

In 2005 a total of 399 people were killed in road accidents, the most deaths since 2001.
