Over 300,000 contacted the Samaritans in 2005

Over 300,000 people contacted the Samaritans last year, according to the charity's first annual report.

It is understood to show that some 48,000 of those calls originated from people who were on the brink of suicide.

Figures recently released by the CSO revealed that of the 134 of the 166 people who took their own lives in the first half of 2005, were men

The Samaritan's received 200,000 calls to its national telephone help-line

A further 100,000 contacts were made via email, letter and face to face meetings

The charity is currently in the process of rolling out a new campaign in nine languages targeting members of Ireland's immigrant community.
