Greenpeace displays dead whale outside Japanese embassy

19/01/2006 - 08:53:03
A dead whale was on display as Greenpeace members protested against whale-hunting in front of the Japanese embassy in Berlin.

The dead whale had been washed up on the shore of the Baltic Sea near Rostock.

Yesterday, a fisheries official said Japan would continue its whale-hunting programme despite mounting international protest,.

The Fisheries Agency received a note protesting against Japan’s whaling activities, signed by 17 countries, according to agency spokesman Hideki Moronoki.

This would not change Japan’s stance on the issue – that Japan is entitled to a yearly catch under international whaling regulations – Moronoki said.

Japan is expected to kill 935 minke whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary over the first four months of the year in what the country says is a scientific research hunt.
