Fans chief backs Miller

19/01/2006 - 12:50:07
The Celtic Supporters Association are convinced Kenny Miller will be accepted by the majority of their fans.

The Wolves striker will become only the third post-war player to cross the Old Firm divide after leaving Hibernian for a disappointing spell at Rangers for £2million in 2000.

Alfie Conn played for Rangers then Celtic, via Tottenham , in the 1970s.

Fellow forward Mo Johnston, more controversially, joined Rangers in 1989 from Nantes after publicly saying that he was looking forward to a second spell with Celtic.

But CSA general secretary Jim Divers is certain his fellow supporters will accept Miller as one of their own.

He said: “It’s ridiculous to even think that any Celtic supporters would say that there is a problem, considering it was good enough for the legendary Jock Stein to bring in former Rangers player Alfie Conn. That does not stand up.

“Jock Stein brought in Alfie Conn and he was a winner with Celtic and the fact that he played with Rangers at one time is fine with most Celtic supporters.

“We want people who can score goals and can fit into the manager’s set-up and that is no problem to the supporters.”

Divers believes Miller will win over all the doubters by delivering the goals and performances in the Hoops.

Celtic beat off competition from Serie A and the English Premiership to secure his services in a pre-contract agreement which will take him to Parkhead in the summer.

The 26-year-old caught the eye with some important goals for Scotland in their failed World Cup qualifying campaign and Divers believes Gordon Strachan has pulled off a coup.

He told Sky Sports News: “He will be watched by the Celtic supporters and we know he can score goals as he has in the past.

“He is only 26 and he will be assessed on his form with Celtic.

“It is like any other player to see if he can do the business for you.

“It is an area that needs strengthening, considering Chris Sutton, who was such a phenomenal player for Celtic for over five years, has left.

“You always need back-up top players like we did with Henrik Larsson.

“We are looking for someone who can sniff out goals and Kenny Miller can do that.”
