Dallaglio dreaming of World Cup glory

19/01/2006 - 07:33:00
Lawrence Dallaglio insists his return to international rugby is not just a short-term decision, with next year’s World Cup in France being the ultimate target.

The 33-year-old was yesterday named in Andy Robinson’s squad for the forthcoming RBS 6 Nations Championship after backtracking on his retirement from England duty in August 2004.

He is already looking ahead to the chance of repeating the heroics that saw England land the last World Cup in Australia in 2003.

“This championship is about England’s future and developing a side to defend the World Cup in France in 2007,” Dallaglio told The Sun.

“No side has ever managed to retain it, so I want us to become the first, and we can do it.”

Dallaglio feels he has earned a place in Robinson’s squad on merit rather than just on past exploits.

“I believe I have earned the recall on form and fitness rather than what I have done in the past,” he added.

“Having a 2003 World Cup-winners’ medal, an MBE and 73 caps will count for nothing when we start work at Loughborough next week.”
