Worrying numbers using mobiles while driving

11/01/2006 - 08:14:50
A study conducted in Co Meath has reportedly uncovered worrying numbers of motorists using their mobile phones while behind the wheel.

Reports this morning said the research, published in the latest edition of the Irish Medical Journal, was carried out by monitoring motorists passing through Navan over a one-hour period last January.

Of the 1,075 drivers monitored, 39 were using hand-held mobile phones, with the problem appearing to be worst among van drivers.

Studies have found that using a mobile phone while driving quadruples the risk of a crash and those behind the Irish research are now calling for legislation to ban the practice in this country.
