The Gardaí and the HSE have reportedly begun separate investigations into the death of a middle-aged Co Wexford woman who was admitted to hospital with severe malnourishment on New Year's Day.

Reports this morning said the 58-year-old woman had been bed-bound in her home in Enniscorthy as a result of arthritis and another illness, believed to be multiple sclerosis.

The reports she had been living with relatives, but an ambulance crew found her lying in her own excrement with maggots on her body when alerted by a concerned third party.

The woman, who was malnourished and dehydrated and weighed just three and a half stone, was taken to Wexford General Hospital, where she died on Sunday.
