Gardaí hoping to make 15% more drink-driving arrests
11/01/2006 - 07:39:13The Gardaí have reportedly set themselves a target of arresting 15% more drunken motorists this year as part of a renewed campaign on road safety.
Reports this morning said the Garda Traffic Corps was also hoping to achieve a similar increase in arrests for speeding and other forms of dangerous driving.
The move comes amid major concern that motorists are continuing to drive under the influence of alcohol and engage in other dangerous behaviour despite increased enforcement, the introduction of the penalty points system and intensive road safety campaigns.
In 2005, 399 people died in accidents on Ireland's roads, the highest figure for the past four years.
