A 35-year-old man with a loaded pistol in his luggage has been arrested at an airport in southern Sweden, police said today.

“The weapon was found when his luggage was X-rayed during check-in,” said Jonn Lambert, a police spokesman at Sturup airport.

The man also had ammunition, two knifes, amphetamine and doping pills in the luggage, Lambert said.

The man, who was not identified, did not have a weapons licence and was suspected of illegal possession of a weapon, Lambert said.

He had checked in at Sturup airport for a flight to the capital, Stockholm, where he had planned to see his girlfriend.

He was to be interrogated later today, Lambert said.

Sturup airport is situated just outside Malmo, 380 miles south of Stockholm.
