Finance Dept figures show another extraordinary year

Figures published this afternoon by the Department of Finance show that 2005 was another spectacular year for the Irish economy.

Budget forecasts in 2004 indicated that the government would have a deficit of €2.9bn at the end of last year, however it turned out the deficit was only €499m - €2.4bn better than had been predicted.

In total the government took in €39.8bn, an increase of 3.5bn on 2004, however €511m came from once off sources such as offshore investigations.
