Tottenham midfielder Teemu Tainio struck his first goal for the club as he broke the first-half deadlock in a dour battle against Newcastle at White Hart Lane.
Robbie Keane earlier had two efforts ruled out for offside as he returned to the Tottenham side as stand-in captain, with Martin Jol underlining his faith in the striker amid fresh speculation over his future.
However, with Newcastle hardly contributing to the drab opening 45 minutes, Tainio finally capitalised on Titus Bramble’s slip just before the break to strike a half-volley past Shay Given.
