Sharp rise in work-related deaths in 2005
31/12/2005 - 10:52:10Figures released today by the Health and Safety Authority have revealed that there was an increase of over 40% in work-related deaths in 2005.
The report also showed that the construction industry remains the most dangerous sector in which to work with 23 deaths in that sector during the year.
Farmers are the next most prone to fatal accidents with 17 deaths in the agricultural sector, seven of the victims were over 65 years of age while there were two child fatalities.
Tom Beegan, CEO of the Health and Safety Authority, has said there is a need for a targeted response in particular sectors and in particular parts of the country such as Cork and Donegal where fatality figures are high.
