Rangers can still be champions - Novo

30/12/2005 - 16:13:26
Striker Nacho Novo insists Rangers can still be crowned Bank of Scotland Premier League champions if they do not drop any more points this season.

The reigning champions are 17 points behind league leaders Celtic after a poor first half to their domestic campaign.

But the 26-year-old is refusing to concede the title and believes Scottish football’s top prize could remain in the Ibrox trophy cabinet.

Novo said: “We must not drop any more points and win every game.

“That is what all the players are thinking, we will try to win every game and see what happens.

“We need to still believe. If you don’t believe, what is the point of playing?

“It will be difficult as Celtic and Hearts need to drop points.

“But I still believe – as does the gaffer and all the players. We have a great team here and will demonstrate this.

“We have had a lot of criticism but we are the champions and are in the Champions League and people have to realise that is a lot of games.

“We have been playing three times a week and that is quite hard.”

Novo has been a frustrated spectator for the majority of the campaign after being sidelined with a foot injury since September 24.

The Spaniard needed an operation to get over the injury and recently made his comeback with substitute appearances at Kilmarnock and Dunfermline.

Novo is now hoping to start against Dundee United at Ibrox tomorrow as the Light Blues aim to end a two-year winless streak in the SPL against the Tangerines.

He said: “I feel great and I’m happy to be back.

“I hope to play against Dundee United as I feel good and strong. I may be need a bit more fitness but I will get that.

“I am happy the team is scoring goals again as the most important thing is the team.

“But it just means I will need to work hard to get my place back in the team.”

Following the recent signing of Kris Boyd from Kilmarnock, Novo has another rival for a striking berth, but the former Dundee forward is relishing the challenge.

Novo said: “I have never been worried by any player who has come in.

“I am trying hard to demonstrate to the gaffer that I should play.

“But I have no worries about any striker or any player who comes in.”
