Meath set for Monday clash with Green Stars

30/12/2005 - 20:06:46
New Meath manager Eamonn Barry will get another chance to run the rule over his players on Monday when the Royals take on a Green Stars selection in a challenge match at Simonstown (throw-in 2.00pm).

Barry has overseen a win over Cavan (2-7 to 0-11) and a loss to Longford (2-6 to 2-10) in recent challenge matches.

The Green Stars, the cream of Meath club players chosen at an AIB-sponsored banquet last month, will be managed by newly-appointed Meath selector Jody Devine. The winning side will lift the Peter McDermott Cup.

A number of more established names are likely to line out for Barry as he attempts to whittle his panel down to 40 players for the impending O'Byrne Cup.

Ronan Fitzsimons, Brendan Murphy, Denis Kealy and John Davis are the only Green Star players to have played for Meath at inter-county level previously.

One-off games between the Green Stars and the Kildare (White Stars) and Dublin (Blue Stars) club selections are thought to be in the pipeline for 2007.

GREEN STARS: Brendan Murphy; John Geoghegan, Damien Sweeney, Paddy Nugent; Eoghan Harrington, Denis Kealy, Gordon Hynes; JB O'Reilly, John Davis; Peter Curran, Barry Regan, Ronan Fitzsimons; Ger Robinson, Mark Crampton, Alan Fox.
